WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, April 13, 2017 — Kriser’s Natural Pet, a company dedicated to providing the best in natural pet food, treats, and supplies, has stepped forward to become the official pet supply sponsor of the newly-launched American Humane “Shelter to Service” pilot program, which will rescue shelter dogs and train them to become lifesaving service animals for military veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). In this way, two lives on either end of the leash may be saved.
Kriser’s Natural Pet, which first opened in Chicago in 2006, will provide food, treats, and supplies for the pilot program’s rescued shelter dogs over the next three months as they undergo advanced training in the hopes of becoming specialized service dogs for prospective veterans. The class of canines will learn everything from basic obedience to safe, proper behaviors in public places. Eventually, each dog will begin to learn specific tasks tailored to meet the unique needs of a veteran with PTS or TBI.
“An average of 20 American veterans commit suicide each day, and an estimated 670,000 dogs are euthanized in U.S. animal shelters every year,” said American Humane President and CEO Dr. Robin Ganzert. “With the support of Kriser’s Natural Pet, American Humane’s Shelter to Service program will save lives of adoptable, abandoned animals and harness the power of the human-animal bond to help our nation’s veterans.”
