Calling All Cat Lovers: Adopt During Coronavirus

March 27, 2020 — During the novel coronavirus pandemic, animal shelters across the country are struggling to place cats into forever homes. American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, is urging all animal lovers to consider fostering or adopting a cat during this trying time.

“During times of unprecedented crisis, we are reminded of the strength of the human-animal bond,” said Robin Ganzert, American Humane’s president and CEO. “By fostering or adopting a cat today, you can relieve stress on your local animal shelter and bring a source of solace and joy into your home.”

Cats provide purr-fect companionship for anyone self-quarantining or sheltering in place. More than 80 percent of pet owners report that their furry friends make them feel less lonely. With the prospect of weeks spent on the couch, cats can bring joy into our lives during an uncertain time for many.

Savannah, a young mother in South Florida, adopted a kitten during the pandemic. Her family was looking to grow and bring more love into their home.

“We saw Otto at the local shelter and knew he was best suited for our family. He was playful, yet cuddly. My three-year-old loved him from the very start,” said Savannah. “We’ve only had Otto home for a week, but he keeps us busy and brings lots of playfulness and excitement to our family during a very trying time.”

American Humane encourages potential fosterers and adopters to consider how a cat’s personality will suit your own. Adult cats are perfect for elderly folks, as they need lots of cuddling and no walks. Younger kittens are a great fit for families with young children interested in more high-energy play.

If your family can accommodate a cat during the novel coronavirus pandemic, contact your local animal shelter today.
