American Humane Presents Monroe County Meals on Wheels with Feed the Hungry Grant

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, June 24, 2020American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, today announced that Monroe County Meals on Wheels received a grant from American Humane’s Feed the Hungry fund. Located in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Monroe County Meals on Wheels provides superior nutritional support, a daily human connection and other supportive services to the home bound so they may remain safe and independent in their homes and have the ability to feed themselves and their pets.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has had several different impacts on our program,” said Stacey Koeck, Special Events Coordinator for Monroe County Meals on Wheels. “Most of our donations come from pet food drives, businesses, groups and other organizations, but of course, the pandemic has impacted these donations. We’ve had several individuals step up and provide us with pet food donations, but it just hasn’t been enough to offset what we’ve lost from these pet food drives. Also, we’ve added several clients to our program since the pandemic, but what we’ve seen mostly impacted is the amount of clients that have asked us for additional supplies above what we normally deliver. Thanks to the Feed the Hungry grant, we’ve been able to accommodate their needs.”

Founded in 1972, Monroe County Meals on Wheels plans, supplies and delivers nutritious and appealing meals, with the help of volunteers, to the homebound who are physically or mentally unable to shop for or prepare meals for themselves. This includes the delivery of pet food for those who require assistance feeding their companions, as well as cat litter. Currently, there are 57 clients participating in the pet food program, with a total of 77 pets. The pet food supply comes solely from public donation, and that has significantly decreased, even as their client list grows. The team at Monroe County Meals on Wheels is struggling to feed their home-bound residents’ pets, and the Feed the Hungry grant will help bridge that gap, enabling them to keep clients’ pets happy, healthy and in their homes where they belong.
