WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, July 8, 2020 — American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, today announced that the Animal Protective Association of Missouri (APA) received a grant from American Humane’s Feed the Hungry fund. Located in St. Louis, Missouri, the APA is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing people and pets together, advancing humane education and creating programs beneficial to the human-animal bond.

Founded in 1922, the APA was originally formed to help prevent cruelty to working animals and stray animals in the “country,” better known now as St. Louis County. The APA now assists and advocates for companion animals in both St. Louis City, St. Louis County and several surrounding counties. While the focus of the organization has shifted over the years to emphasize education and adoption, it has remained a leader in the humane treatment of animals in the St. Louis area. The shelter works hard to find homes for every adoptable pet, no matter how long it takes, but the average length of stay for a pet is less than one week once available for adoption. Along with adoption services, the APA has a veterinary clinic and hosts a database for lost pets. The APA was selected as a recipient of the Feed the Hungry grant due to its COVID-19 outreach efforts. The fund will help feed the many pets in need around the area.
