WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, August 20, 2020 — Thousands of live chicks, which are regularly shipped via the Postal Service, are dying in transit to rural farms, according to a report from The Portland Press Herald. American Humane’s president and CEO Dr. Robin R. Ganzert is urging the Postal Service to adopt independent, humane oversight of its practices, releasing the following statement:
When animals are transported through the air, over the ground or on water, they should arrive to their destination safely and securely. Unfortunately, the deaths of thousands of chicks in transit to rural farms is just the latest in a litany of incidents of animals dying needless and cruel deaths in transport.
Thirty-eight French bulldog puppies were found dead on a Ukrainian International Airlines plane in Toronto just this past June. As the largest certifier of animal welfare in the world, American Humane is urging the USPS – and all entities that transport live animals – to welcome independent auditing and humane oversight of their practices.
Evidence-based standards for safe, humane travel, developed by the world’s leading scientists and audited by impartial inspectors must be an industry standard to help ensure the safe transportation of live animals.
This week, American Humane released a critical policy report, A New Deal for Animals, People and the World We Share, which includes a section on the absolute need to enforce safety standards for animals in all forms of transport.
