Farm Animals
American Humane protects farm animals by working with producers through the groundbreaking American Humane Certified™ farm animal program (formerly known as the Free Farmed program). American Humane Certified guarantees consumers that the products they select are from animals that were raised and treated humanely.
The American Humane Certified program traces its roots to the very formation of the American Humane Association in 1877. That year, humane organizations from throughout the country gathered at a landmark meeting in Ohio to unite their missions and resources in a stronger voice to protect livestock from inhumane treatment. American Humane immediately went to work to improve conditions for farm animals in transit and ensure the humane treatment of cattle, hogs, sheep and poultry. And that was only the beginning.
Now, after more than a century of protecting farm animals on a national level, American Humane continues to be a powerful advocate for humane standards. Working with producers on an individual level, through our American Humane Certified program, provides animals a greater degree of care and protection, while providing consumers with an expanding choice of meat, poultry, milk and egg products from animals that were raised humanely. Only select producers successfully passing American Humane’s rigorous certification process are designated American Humane Certified -- attesting to the care with which they raise and treat their animals.
